Have you ever been embarrassed by being a Doctor Who fan?
Is embarrassment a terminal plague upon your love of the series, or do you wear fandom on your sleeve, cosplaying at conventions and generally having a lot of fun with things?
This strange collision of approaches – dressing up vs self loathing – is the main topic of discussion in this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) in which we talk about the differences between Brian Terranova and James McLean following the former’s regular cosplaying adventures and the latter’s inability to buy a copy of DWM without wondering what the WHSmith girl thinks of him.

Only time I was ever embarassed by Doctor Who fandom was in church once, when a very nice Brother from the monastery next door asked me what my ‘cross’ represented and I had to explain it wasn’t a cross, but a classic series TARDIS key pendant. When everyone had stopped laughing I pointed out that Doctor Who was cool these days and I didn’t need to be embarassed by it. But I was, just a bit!
I don’t think I’ve ever felt embarrassed by being a Doctor Who fan, more frustrated at people who don’t have any idea about it, especially years ago when I was a kid and then a teen, in the days when it was still very much a cult show here in the states. I would dress up as the Doctor and most people didn’t have a clue who I was actually dressing up as. I was called a hobo once in my Fourth Doctor outfit, and a pimp in my Seventh.
This at least explains how the Nitro 9 could be afforded… :O
