An increasing amount of comedy is finding its way into the Podcasting charts, with names such as Ricky Gervais, Phil Jupitus, Armstrong & Miller and more heading a list of amusing downloads.
260,000 downloads graced Ricky Gervais’ podcasts back in 2005, with other comedians quick to follow. One currently amusing example is Andrew Collins and Richard Herring‘s weekly news review, and the format gives comedians the oppurtunity to showcase new material.
The medium of the podcast was however slow to be graced by successful comedy material, and despite what you or I might think of Ricky Gervais (who thankfully has been in hiding for the last few months) his influence has shaped an awful lot of comedy. Whether you like docu-sitcoms or not, his use of the podcast to pioneer a new home for comedy has already had a massive impact. Who can ignore Russell Brand’s seemingly endless stream of nonsense?
One day, perhaps we’ll have a comedy classic available only via podcast…
