Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon launches on HBO in 2022 and today’s new trailer is dominated by the face and voice of former Doctor Who star Matt Smith.
Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Smith plays Daemon Targaryen, one of the dragon-affiliated, interbreeding princes of legend in George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood. Younger brother of king Viserys I (Paddy Considine), Daemon appears to be a key character in the forthcoming series.
Meanwhile, Emma D’Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, is the Hand of the King. Rivals to House Targaryen, House Velaryon is just as old and features Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon (aka “The Sea Snake”) and Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon.
Also cast is Jefferson Hall as twins Lord Jason Lannister and Tyland Lannister, with veteran actors Bill Paterson (Lord Lyman Beesbury), Graham McTavish (Ser Harrold Westerling), and David Horovitch (Grand Maester Mellos).
Expect power struggles, dragons, and far less nudity and mysogyny than Game of Thrones when House of the Dragon hits streaming services in 2022.
