Beatles 64: A Scorsese-produced documentary coming to Disney+

The Beatles 64 documentary on Disney+

A new documentary about the Fab Four, “Beatles 64”, will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning November 29, 2024. The film is co-produced by Martin Scorsese and covers the band’s invasion of America.

Following the success of Peter Jackson’s Get Back epic in 2021, Scorsese and David Tedeschi – who also directs – have teamed up for “Beatles 64” which chronicles the Beatles’ electrifying first visit to America. The film features never-before-seen footage of the Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and their adoring US fans, restored in 4K.

Despite splitting up in 1970, the Beatles continue to thrill audiences with new releases, both of remixed and remastered material, and the occasional new track from the archives. In the coming weeks, fans can look forward to a groundbreaking documentary and the reissuing of their classic albums on vinyl.

Per the press release:

On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country. Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most watched television event of its time. Beatles 64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.

The film includes rare footage filmed by pioneering documentarians Albert and David Maysles, beautifully restored in 4K by Park Road Post in New Zealand. The live performances from The Beatles first American concert at the Washington, DC Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan appearances were demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin. Spotlighting this singular cultural moment and its continued resonance today, the music and footage are augmented by newly filmed interviews with Paul and Ringo, as well as fans whose lives were transformed by The Beatles.

So, as with Jackson’s “Get Back” movies, production of “Beatles 64” features the latest technology employed to enhance old audio and visual material. There is a good chance that this documentary will bring that largely mono, black and white, 525-line US standard era of 1964 into the 4K, high definition audio of 2024.

To coincide with the release of the documentary, the American editions of Beatles albums will be reissued on 180-gram audiophile vinyl. These analog cuts are based on the original mono masters and offer a high-quality listening experience for vinyl enthusiasts.

“Beatles 64” lands on Disney+ on November 29th, 2024.
