David Tennant and Catherine Tate Doctor Who Return Announced! [UPDATED]

Catherine Tate and David Tennant

Well, the title says it all! Just a week after the new Doctor was announced, now an old one has!

Last week, who could have imagined a David Tennant and Catherine Tate Doctor Who return at all, never mind so swiftly? This is how it was announced:

The Doctor Who website then crashed, prompting many to briefly wonder if it was a hack or fake. Fortunately, the Radio Times was on hand to back up the news. Said incoming showrunner Russell T Davies in the official statement:

“They’re back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening? Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.

“The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

But how can the Tenth Doctor and Donna return? The speculation has already begun, led by the BBC’s press release:

“The Doctor and Donna parted ways when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory, making her forget him, in order to save her life. He left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die. But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?”

Curiously, following the announcements, other Doctors were trending on Twitter, particularly Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. Could there be more to come from this story? We certainly shouldn’t rule it out:

In the podcast at the top of the page, Christian Cawley and James McLean consider the impact of this news and what it might mean for Doctor Who in 2023, the show’s 60th anniversary year. With rumours of just three specials next year, along with the hint of further returning stars, even the sky isn’t a limit. And aren’t things looking a lot more interesting now RTD is back in charge? And that’s without the pleasing sight of Sylvester McCoy and Ncuti Gatwa sending each other videos online!
